My Synthesized Life Story
To tell you a little more about myself, I will have to start from the beginning: I was born right here in Lisbon, where I have lived most of my life. My father is Spanish and my mother is Portuguese, so that makes me Iberian, which gives me great pride.
I went to school at the Spanish School in Lisbon, enrolling in 1976 till the 10º grade, when I left a very confused teenager. At this point in my life I started working for a promotional company and four years later I joined BBDO as a receptionist, working there practically until my marriage. In the middle of all this, I still found time to finish high school. At this point I was already a young lady and I am happy to say one who had already come to her senses: I was older and wiser, thank goodness!
As I was saying, around this time I was finishing the 12º grade when I applied for the AD-HOC Exam, which I passed, enrolling in 1992 in ISCSP to study Foreign Affairs.
Two years later I got married and moved with my husband, who is a staff sergeant in the Portuguese Air force, to Air Base n.º 4 in Lajes-Azores where I lived for five years. Those were very happy times for me: my girls were born, which was a blessing. Everybody welcomed us with open arms. The island is so beautiful, so green and alive, so peaceful and yet so stimulating, it’s quite magical. One has to be there, breathe the air, stare into the deep blue sea, feel the energy emanating all around us, it is so exhilarating. Truly amazing almost a different planet.
But nothing is meant to last forever, right? So our commission ended, my husband got sent to East Timor for six months and I returned to Lisbon with my babies: Inês was almost three and Beatriz a little over one. Through a friend I started transcribing judicial tapes for lawyers, soon after I was working for the system as a free lancer. At this point, quite by chance someone asked me if I was available to do an interpretation seeing as I was bilingual, from that moment on I knew I had found my purpose in this life.
However it is clear to me that there is still a lot of room to improve my skills and proficiencies, and that is the main reason I am here today writing this paper for you, because I love translating, especially literature. Historical novels are my favourite.
A life time ago, in an English class, a teacher told us to write down the three things we would like to do most in our life and I wrote that I would like to get married and have kids, visit Thailand, and be successful in a job I loved. Well the first two are done and the last one, I’m still working that one out, but I think I’m on the right path, don’t you?
